Man remains in Garda custody over assault on Olympic boxer

A man in his 20's remains in Garda custody in Mullingar this morning following an attack on Olympic Silver Medallist John Joe Nevin.

The boxer was left hospitalised following the dispute in the Ardleigh area of Mullingar yesterday morning.

Gardaí launched an investigation after they were called to the disturbance – involving a number of people – shortly after 11am.

Another man and a woman – both in their 20's – were also taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore, with non-life threatening injuries.

John Joe Nevin's leg has been broken to two places, which puts him out of the ring for the foreseeable future.
