The weapon was found along with ammunition and a stash of drugs in a property in the Graiguecullen area on Thursday.
At about 11 o'clock on Thursday morning Gardaí and Revenue officers joined forces to carry out a planned raid on a property in the Graiguecullen area of Carlow.
There they uncovered around €20,000 worth of the drug Pentedrone, which is a psychoactive stimulant, previously found in so-called 'legal highs'.
Among the haul was also ammunition and, crucially, a gun reported to have been taken in a previous burglary.
A 49 year old man was arrested at scene – he is expected to appear at Carlow District Court at around half nine this morning.
