It has been confirmed by the Garda Ombudsman that a garda car involved in a fatal collision in Co Louth early this morning was not in pursuit, but was on patrol.
A man in his 30s died after he was knocked down by the car on the main Carlingford to Dundalk road, just outside Bellurgan at about 1:20am this morning.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
GSOC Spokesperson Lorna Lee says it happened on a dark stretch of road.
“It's the R173, it is quite a small road I believe” she said.
“The garda car was travelling from the direction of Carlingford towards Dundalk – I believe it's quite a dark road with limited lighting” she added.
Meanwhile two nuns have been killed in a road crash involving a police car in the North.
The collision happened just before half past nine this morning on the Belfast Road in Newry.
Three male police officers travelling in the police car were not injured.
The Police Ombudsman of Northern Ireland has been informed and will lead the investigation.
The Belfast Road has been closed in both directions and diversions are in place.
