Major hike in kidney donations

Fifty people donated their kidneys to loved ones via the Living Kidney Donor Programme – a jump from 33 in 2015.

Overall, 280 organ transplants were carried out during 2016 – the second highest number ever – with an average of 23 transplants per month.

These included a total of 172 kidneys, 58 livers, 35 lungs and 15 hearts.

Health Minister Simon Harris has welcomed the news and is encouraging everyone to consider organ donation and to share this intention with their loved ones.
