The Independent deputy is coming under fire on a number of social media sites since he posted a picture of himself with the side all kitted out in their new threads.
However he insists that he has always supported the GAA locally and was one of a number of people who came on board to help with preparations surrounding Sunday's clash with Kilkenny.
Following Tipperary's outstanding victory over Cork last month Michael Lowry said he received a call from the County Board Chairman about getting a sponsor for the new suits the players would be wearing as part of the All Ireland Hurling weekend.
Mr Lowry said that Sean Nugent pointed out that while they were thrilled to be heading for the All Ireland it would be expensive and they were looking to reduce the costs.
The Tipperary TD said he then made a couple of phone calls and within the hour he had the suits sorted – new shoes and all.
Yesterday he tweeted a picture of himself flanked by the team donning their new threads but it provoked a strong online backlash.
However speaking on Tipp Today – Mr Lowry said the county board made the approach and that he had nothing to defend
In a statement The county board secretary Tim Floyd acknowledged the support of all of its sponsors as they prepare for the cash of the ask with the cats and having experienced All Ireland's before – the board was well aware of the excessive costs.
He said that Michael Lowry was just one of many who agreed to help out and bring a consortium of good Tipperary supporters together to fund the players’ suits.
Tim Floyd added that the board also received causal wear from Mr Mister for the Monday night of the homecoming as well as various sports gear items from O’Neill’s
The County board secretary expressed their appreciation to all sponsors and hoped that their generosity would be rewarded.
