Councillor Jim Ryan made the plea at the recent meeting of North Tipp County Council for lifebuoys along the half mile stretch from Ladyswell to Turtulla bridge.

He says a teenager got in to difficulty in the water recently and was lucky to get out uninjured.

His plea was denied by the Council who say only areas traditionally used for swimming could qualify for lifebuoys.

However Councillor Ryan says the area is popular with swimmers.
