Tony Lawlor has held the position of vice chairman for 21 years.

His resignation is understood to be one of 6 changes that will be made to the board of the Irish Red Cross, in light of a damning report, in to the society by the Dail Public Accounts Committee.

One of the problems highlighted, was an undisclosed donation of €165,000 which was discovered in a bank account in Mr Lawlors own district of Tipperary following a secret audit.

The Committee chairman John McGuinness criticised how the society was being controlled by a small group of people, who have controlled the board for a number of years.
