Meanwhile an Opinion poll for the Observer newspaper has the Tories on 36 per cent – and Labour on 34 – both an increase on a week ago.

The same survey leaves Liberal Democrats unchanged on 7 per cent, with the Ukip dropping three points to 11 per cent.
