Killea National School currently has 44 pupils housed in 2 classrooms.
The Department of Education approved funding for a new classroom at Killea National School near Templemore earlier this year.
Now Tipperary County Council has granted planning permission for the work at the two teacher school in the shadow of the Devil's Bit.
The enrolment figures have grown in the school over the past few years making the need to extend the accommodation even more pressing.
The school was built in 1894 with the classrooms each measuring just 35 square metres – the current Department of Education guideline is 80 square metres.
The Board of Management and Principal also hope to convert the old school into a new second classroom and resource room.
However the school will have to embark on a major fundraising effort to see these ambitions reach fruition.
