The bill was as a result of a failed attempt by a residents association to prevent North Tipperary County Council from allocating a house in the area to a Traveller couple and their 8 children.
Brendan Maguire of Ivy Grove, Cullenagh, Ballina appeared before Ennis Circuit Court yesterday where he was ordered to pay €40 per month to Charlie and Noreen O'Reilly of Cullenagh.
This is to cover the legal costs incurred by the O'Reilly's in a High Court action that Mr Maguire and four others – supported by 61 members of the Cullenagh Residents Association – took against North Tipp County Council in 2009.
They had unsuccessfully tried to prevent the O'Reilly's and their eight children from moving into a €465,000 council owned house in the area.
The O'Reilly's were notice parties in the High Court action and have secured a decree against Brendan Maguire for their legal bill.
Mr Maguire told Judge Gerald Keyes yesterday that he had put his name to the High Court action on the basis of his neighbours signing a letter that each person would be equally liable for costs in the case.
He handed the letter into court with Judge Keyes saying Brendan Maguire was entitled to bring separate proceedings against them and look for a contribution.
Judge adjourned the matter to October 28 to allow Mr Maguire lodge an affidavit of means.
