They were arrested after detectives investigating the activities of dissident republicans, carried out a search in the Kilcurry area of Co Louth.
There, a suspect device was discovered. It's now been taken away for further examination.

The five men detained range in age from their mid 50's to their early 70's. They're being held under the provisions of Section 30 Offences Against the State Act.
