The Olympic Council of Ireland has begun its own investigation after Kevin Mallon – who works for British hospitality provider THG Sports – was arrested in Brazil on suspicion of selling illegal tickets to high profile events.

The Irish Independent reports that both Fianna Fail and Sinn Fein want the Sports Minister Shane Ross to initiate an inquiry – but Mr Ross has yet to respond.

Fianna Fail's Timmy Dooley says Mr Ross would be “hopping mad” over the issue were he still in Opposition.

While Sinn Fein's Imelda Munster said the controversy had the potential to damage Ireland's reputation.
