Hundreds of people gathered for a memorial service for the victims at UCD this lunchtime.

President Michael D Higgins was among those who attended the service at Belfield Church.

Three of the six Irish students who died in Berkeley went to UCD – and this lunchtime the university expressed grief at its loss and solidarity with the families.

Hundreds of students, staff and dignitaries including President Higgins came together to remember the six young lives lost.

UCD Chaplain Fr Leon O’Giollain led the service.

UCD President Andrew Deekes praised the college and the people of Ireland for rallying around the families.

He said six beautiful lives would never be forgotten.

The service comes as the families of the victims in Berkeley prepare to bring their loved ones home – while investigations continue.
