Hard-pressed homeowners in Tipperay and elsewhere  are facing bills of at least 300 euro – to cover the cost of having a water meter installed.

A report in today's Sunday Times says the Government won't foot the bill for buying and installing the meters, but will instead pass on the charge to householders in an effort to save funding for local authorities.

The plan is to have water metering in place from 2014.
