Holistic drug rehab centre for Carrick.

A drug rehabilitation centre has opened its doors in Carrick on Suir this week.

A letter was sent to residents in the locality recently informing them about the project.

It's understood Quiesco will provide a 21 week live-in programme for drug addicts – to qualify they have to be drug free for 3 weeks.

Prospective residents are assessed at least twice prior to admission.

Tipp FM News understands that the group has been trying to find a base for the centre for a number of years.

Among the locations considered were the Tipperary Hostel project in Tipp Town and the former Glen Hotel in the Glen of Aherlow.

However the voluntary housing association Respond has now come on board with a low-cost lease for part of the old Friary in Carrick Beg.

The property and gardens were donated to Respond by the Franciscans some years ago.

Among those on the board of Quiesco are Independent T.D Mattie McGrath and the former Governor of Mountjoy Prison, Bansha native John Lonergan.
