Councillors will be demanding answers regarding a €1.1 million housing development project in Roscrea which was only brought to their attention in recent days.
The issue lead to sharp exchanges at Monday's meeting of the overall authority as some members unsuccessfully tried to raise the matter as it wasn't on the agreed agenda.
It’s understood this matter relates to a proposed social housing development on a six acre site adjacent to the Glencarrig Estate in Roscrea – and locals in the area held a public meeting on the matter a number of days ago.
At Monday's meeting of Tipperary County Council – local Councillor Michael Smith attempted to raise the matter but was ruled out of order with CEO Joe McGrath informing him that it had to be raised at municipal District level on Wednesday (today). However Councillor Smith again insisted that he should be allowed to discuss it under the housing agenda while a number of his fellow Councillors in the municipal district expressed disquiet that the first they heard of this housing project was in recent days and were seeking clarification.
A number of other local representatives also expressed the view that maybe it should be raised while Sinn Fein Seamie Morris commented that if there was €1.1 million in housing money floating around Roscrea then why couldn't it come to Nenagh where housing was badly needed.
Towards the end of the meeting Councillor Smith again tried to raise the issue and called for a vote – but this could not be accommodated due to the lack of numbers present. Both the Cathaoirleach and the CEO also pointed out that under the new system general county wide issues pertaining to Tipperary are dealt with at county council level while individual projects for particular areas have to be addressed at Municipal level.
