The delay in finding a replacement ophthalmologist for South Tipperary is a growing cause of concern according to a local County Councillor.

It follows the retirement of Dr Maureen Hillary last year which has led to families having to pay for private appointments for their children.

Councillor John O’Heney has been in contact with the HSE on the matter and has been told that they are having difficulties in finding someone who specialises in this area.

However as he pointed out on Tipp Today it was no secret that Dr Hillary was retiring.

“Everyone knew – every parent in the area knew across South Tipperary that there was going to be no Ophthalmologist from last September and no here we are in May of 2025 and the position still hasn’t been filled.

“But look, there has been major progress on it and the HSE are engaging with me on this and I’m hoping that the position will be filled in this calendar year and that it shouldn’t run on any longer.”
