January was the worst month on record for hospital overcrowding and UHL was by far the worst offender.
There were 2,234 patients admitted without beds to the hospital in Limerick which serves North Tipp – 700 higher than the next most overcrowded which was CUH in Cork.
According to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation 276 patients were treated on trolleys at TUH in Clonmel last month while the figure for Nenagh was 98.
84 per cent of nurses say they have treated patients in corridors, waiting rooms and other inappropriate areas in the last year.
The nursing union has published its first ‘Behind The Trolley Numbers’ report which highlights the overcrowding crisis right across the country.
72 per cent of nurses say they’ve observed patient safety incidents such as falls and medication delays directly related to inappropriate care settings.
INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha says keeping people on trolleys can prolong their misery and harm their chances of getting better.
