The Taoiseach admits the reconfiguration of hospital services in the Mid-West including Nenagh was a failure.
Simon Harris says while changes were needed to address issues with the health service the way it was done was far from ideal.
The Fine Gael leader told Fran Curry on Tipp Today earlier that the loss of the Emergency Department in Nenagh was a big mistake.
“Yes, it was an utter hames. That’s not to say that configuration wasn’t needed but you don’t change the health service and promise people we’ll make it better in the future – you make it better first – and that didn’t happen.
“I’m very clear in relation to what needs to happen in relation to the Mid-West. The HIQA review which is underway in terms of the appropriateness of a second ED needs to conclude as quickly as possible and I can be very clear – if that report says there is a need for a second Emergency Department any Government that I lead and any Government that Fine Gael is in that will absolutely act on that.”
