Call for major investment in South Tipp General

Comparing the Clonmel hospital with Cork University Hospital has been described as comparing ‘a Mini with a Rolls Royce’.

South Tipp General is regularly ranked as one of the most overcrowded in the country, according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation’s daily trolley watch reports.

However, a Tipperary TD says the ranking of hospitals by the numbers patients on trolleys does not accurately reflect the scale of the challenges present in the Premier County.

Independent Deputy Mattie McGrath says that South Tipp General Hospital is in a major crisis – he feels comparing South Tipperary General Hospital with larger hospitals such as CUH may be ‘masking the crisis’ in the hospital.

He says the hospital has to deal with narrow corridors and cramped spaces, something which CUH as a more modern facility does not have to encounter.

Deputy McGrath is calling on the Minister for Health Simon Harris to spend more time and money delivering urgently needed services to the hospital.
