GRA conference gets underway in County Carlow.

The Garda Representative Association says more rank and file officers need independent counselling.

The GRA will today vote on a motion calling for all members of the force – who attend traumatic incidents – to be automatically referred to external professionals.

It's one of 47 motions before delegates who represent 10,000 Gardaí across the country.

GRA President Dermot O'Brien says members need counselling – and shouldn't be afraid to seek it out.
