Alan Kelly believes it will be a couple of months before EuroStat issues its ruling on the so-called 'market corporation test'.

If Irish Water fails the test, its debts will be considered part of the government's – which could have an impact on austerity measures.

Minister Kelly has told the Dáil the government has given all the documentation it can, and it is now just playing the waiting game.

“This is a closed process and it is awaiting the final adjudication…genuinely deputy, I can't give you a date” he said.

“I would expect it in a couple of months, I can't give you a date – it is a closed process and it is a matter for them to make that announcement” he added.
