The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors have accused the Government of “policing on the cheap” with no funding earmarked for the training of new recruits.

The AGSI also says a five million euro site for a tactical training centre near Templemore has been left idol and rotting.

The AGSI – which is holding its annual conference – says that while the decision to recruit new Gardaí this year – for the first time in 5 years – is welcome – its warning there's no funding to train the recruits.

The middle ranking Garda body says the training college in Templemore has seen little investment in recent years – with no budget for new staff or equipment.

Tim Galvin is the AGSI President and is calling for better in-service training for existing members of the force.

Galvin says the construction of the Dromad tactical training site outside Templemore – which cost millions of euro to buy – has not materialised and has been ‘left there to rot’.
