Enda Kenny and Joan Burton will agree a date before cabinet this morning, but the Dáil might not be dissolved today.

Enda Kenny and Joan Burton will have their usual pre-cabinet meeting this morning and are expected to sign off on the date then.

Having flirted with polling on Thursday the 25th – the exact anniversary of the last election – the two are set to agree to polling on the following day, Friday the 26th, a more traditional day of the week for voting.

But although the date will be agreed today – and likely shared at cabinet, or possibly even in the Dáil later today – the election might not be called.

Instead the Taoiseach could give TDs one last day of business, and hold off until tomorrow before travelling to Aras an Uachtarain, to ask for the Dáil to be dissolved and the election called.

President Higgins has no appointments either today or tomorrow – so even in the dying days of this term, Enda Kenny is the one still calling the shots.
