A new facial recognition system has been introduced at Garda Headquarters to help investigate crimes.

Evo-fit uses a person’s recognition of a criminal’s face, rather than their recall of individual features.

For witnesses, or victims of a crime, piecing together the criminal’s face can be very difficult.

They often tell investigating Gardaí that they’d know them if they saw them again, but find it hard to describe them in detail.

With Evo Fit – rather than being asked to describe the nose, eye and face-shape, witnesses are shown a series of faces from a database.

Once the image is evolved to a face, there are so-called holistic tools which can change the character

The system has been in use for 3 weeks at Garda Headquarters where it’s already been a success.

The system is mobile, so can be brought to any part of the country on request within 24 hours.

Humberside police in the UK have seen their success rate has gone from 14 percent to a whopping 74 percent with Evo fit.
