Following an upsurge of break-ins to houses in the mid-Tipp area Gardai are warning people to be more security conscious.

While figures show a continued fall in the number of burglaries in the Tipperary Division there has been a spike in the Thurles area in the last few weeks.

The number of break-ins generally increases by around 25% in the winter months with most happening between 5 in the evening and 11 at night.

The long dark evenings allow burglars to see if there is no one home with rooms unlit or curtains open and no car in the driveway.

Crime Prevention Officer for the Tipperary Garda Division Sgt Tom O'Dwyer is advising people to secure all doors and windows and to use timer switches to turn on lights.

He is also urging people not to leave keys near windows or letter boxes and to record details of valuables and don’t keep large amounts of cash at home.
