Gardai say they’ve foiled at least 30 attempts to kill, where the threat to life was imminent.

Garda management say the reopening of Templemore training college has had a tangible impact on their capacity to fight crime, saying they’ve turned a corner.

So far this year 60 new detective sergeants are working in Special Crime Operations – which includes areas like Cybercrime, Child Exploitation and Organised Crime.

But gardai warn that organised crime is an unfortunate fact of life in Ireland, like in any other modern jurisdiction.

Assistant commissioner John O’Driscoll on how increased recruitment and funding are changing their capacity to fight crime.

He says the extra resources mean they’ve had an increase so far this year of 60 garda sergeants in special crime operations.

And since the Regency Airport shooting – they’ve saved at least 30 lives from an imminent threat.

Detective Superintendent Seamus Boland from the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau says organised crime is an unfortunate reality in Ireland, but he praised the support of communities in tackling it.

Assistant commissioner O’Driscoll says organised crime remains a significant threat, but they’re making progress including the seizure of 100 million euro in drugs – and significant weapons seizures this year alone.
