Investigations are underway following a fire at a disused meat processing plant in Clonmel last night.

The fire started at the site of the former Clonmel foods meat processing plant just off the Dungarvan road on the border with Waterford.

The alarm was raised at 6pm and several fire crews from Clonmel, Carrick-on-Suir and Cahir attended the scene.

Heavy smoke from the blaze effectively shut down the Irishtown area yesterday evening – roads were closed and residents advised to close their windows and remain indoors.

Tipperary fire crews were faced with the daunting task of entering the site with minimal visibility due to smoke.

Roster Senior Fire Officer, Tadgh O’Driscoll, detailed the hazards facing the first responders and residents.

Clonmel Gardai have been investigating the incident. Inspector James White told us the investigations were in their early stages and that CCTV from the area was being examined

Gardai are urging anybody with information relating to the fire to call Clonmel Garda station on 052 6177640.
