Speed is a factor in one third of all fatal collisions, according to Gardaí and the RSA.

Gardaí are conducting a national Slow Down Day until 7am tomorrow which will see them operate high profile speed checks across the country.

They’ll also be delivering safety messages through social media and handing out information to the public at various locations.

On last year’s Slow Down Day 927 drivers were caught speeding.

Garda Derek Cloughley, from the Road Safety Unit, says they want people to slow down every day, not just today.
