The Taoiseach’s promising an overhaul of speed checkpoints, following the death of an on-duty Garda.
Micheál Martin says more measures are needed to protect Gardaí like Kevin Flatley, who was fatally struck by a motorcycle while working yesterday afternoon.
The motorcyclist, aged in his 30s, remains in serious condition in Beaumont Hospital.
Father of two Kevin Flatley – from Balbriggan in Dublin, is the 90th member of Gardaí killed in the line of duty.
Tipperary Superintendent Eddie Golden is among those paying tribute to Garda Flatley.
However he told Tipp Today earlier that members of An Garda Siochana are aware of the dangers every time they go out.
“Unfortunately yesterday it came to the door of An Garda Siochana and one of our own. It is a dangerous job – there are times when members of An Garda Siochana have to do certain activities like yesterday. A day where Kevin would have gone out as a member of the Roads Policing Unit in Dublin and engage in duty to prevent speeding and enforce the Road Traffic Act and make sure everybody was safe on the roads and unfortunately an incident happened.”
Books of Condolence have been opened at Thurles, Nenagh and Clonmel Garda stations.
