Many victims are too embarrassed to report the fraud to Gardaí.

Sergeant John McCormack is the Crime Prevention Officer for Tipperary.

“It’s a person being contacted online or going on a dating app and being contacted by email or by digital means by somebody who is pretending to be someone that they’re not.

“They’re trying to make people discover that they’ve met the perfect partner but its really a scammer who is using digital means to gain their trust in order to manipulate money from them or even force them or push them into making financial decisions they wouldn’t normally make.”
