A Tipperary TD has suggested the Justice Minister should ask serious questions of the Garda Commissioner.
Labour’s Alan Kelly raised concerns in the Dáil this morning about potential health implications for Gardaí stations in old buildings which may contain asbestos.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan responded saying he had not been told by Commissioner Drew Harris or the GRA of any issues.
Deputy Kelly said the Minister needs to have serious discussions about this and other before the head of the Gardaí steps down later this year.
“I read recently you said you can only ask questions. Well maybe you need to have a truth and reconciliation meeting with the Commissioner. Maybe you need to sit down and say ‘Hey Commissioner, do you know what you’re out the gap there on the 1st September. Is there anything else in the long list of issues that you haven’t told me about?’
“Maybe you should say as Minister I shouldn’t have to ask the question. Maybe you should say ‘Commissioner there’s a thing called Section 41 where you have to tell me things. Maybe you should have told me about this. Maybe its and exposure to the State.”
