The Garda Commissioner says they will not reach their target of new recruits into the force this year.
Drew Harris was speaking at the passing out ceremony for 149 new members at the Garda College in Templemore this morning.
The Government had set a goal of having 1,000 new members attested this year but speaking in Templemore this morning Commissioner Harris said this is simply not possible with the maximum likely to be 800.
98 of the new recruits will be posted to the Dublin region, the east will get 28, 13 will be posted in the southern region, while the North Western region will get 10 new Gardaí.
A further 285 recruits are currently at the college and the next class of future members will start on Monday.
