A motorist caught travelling at more than three times the posted speed limit near Thurles is due in court later this month.

Last Monday was designated National Slow Down Day across the country with a 24 hour enforcement operation supported by the Road Safety Authority.

However Sgt Carol O’Leary says Gardaí are regularly checking for speeding as one motorist found out to their cost recently.

“As on every day we’re out there but on the 24th of August Gardaí in Thurles were out when they detected a car travelling at a speed of 144 kilometres in a 50 kilometre zone. So the driver failed to stop then and drove on a little bit – they were identified and later arrested. They’ll be before the court up in Thurles at the end of the month – that’s not a ticket, that’s a day out in court to face that kind of a speed result.

Garda checkpoints across Tipperary are yielding results with regular detections for drink or drug driving and speeding offences.

These targeted operations can happen at any time of the day or night on local, regional or national roads.

Sgt Carol O’Leary says a motorist recently failed to stop at a checkpoint and tried to evade Gardaí by taking to the backroads around Horse and Jockey around 10pm on August 27th.

“The driver actually increased their speed when they saw the checkpoint and dangerously drove past Gardaí. After a bit of a safe pursuit he eventually was stopped – he was breathalysed at the scene, failed the roadside breath test. He was arrested and brought to Thurles Garda station where he again failed a further breath test and has now been charged and is heading to court to face the consequence of his actions.”
