Crime Prevention Officer Sgt John McCormack says these “smishing” scams can be quite convincing.

“It’s where a fraudster sends text messages claiming to come from a reputable organisation such as a bank, Revenue, gov.ie, An Post or maybe a mobile phone company. The message will typically ask you to click on a link or to call a phone number to verify, update or reactivate your account. This website is a fake account and the number leads to the fraudster pretending to be the company. They then attempt to get you to disclose some personal financial or security information which may be used to steal your money.”
