Carol Hawkins, originally from North London but with a last address at Lower Rathmines Road, Dublin was jailed in 2012 on 181 counts of theft from two of the musician's Bank of Ireland accounts between 2004 to 2008.

She wasn't in court for today's ruling which has upheld her conviction for stealing nearly €3 million from Adam Clayton's bank accounts.

The U2 bassist's former PA spent the money on thoroughbred horses, shopping sprees, a New York apartment and she also funded her children's education.

All grounds of appeal failed including a claim that Adam Clayton should not have been allowed sit in on the trial before he gave evidence but the Court of Criminal Appeal still has to decide whether to reduce Carol Hawkins's 7 year jail sentence.

Her lawyers are urging leniency – they say she's a model prisoner; she's making amends and has suffered public notoriety for offences that will follow her to the grave.

The prosecution says leave it unchanged because the 51 year old has shown a lack of insight and remorse in relation to her offending behaviour.
