European court rules out minimum price for alcohol

Only a week after the Minister for Health published laws to pave the way for minimum alcohol prices here, the ECJ has found that similar laws in Scotland are contrary to EU legislation.

Leo Varadkar wants to charge a minimum price of €2 for a can of beer, and €10 for a bottle of wine.

Senator and Economics Professor Sean Barrett was against those proposals – he says the only people to benefit from floor prices would be the drinks industry.
