Alan Kelly yesterday announced a new strategy where the Government expects to provide 90 thousand homes by 2020.
The Portroe TD says that he had advised local authorities, including Tipperary County council that this plan was coming down the line and to be prepared with possible projects ready to go ahead.
Draft proposals for social housing at the Glencarrig Estate in Roscrea came under fire at a meeting of the Thurles Templemore Municipal District yesterday with several elected representatives expressing concern that that existing issues within the estate have not been addressed.
However, Minister Kelly says that it is the responsibility of the local authority to ensure that the infrastructure is in place to build social housing.
The plans for Glencarrig would see 10 houses built in the estate, with a long-term plan of 30 homes.
Council officials said that the plans would now to go the Department for approval before coming back to the local authority for the Part 8 process.
Aidan Fennessy, Senior Executive Officer with Tipperary County Council says that the existing problems within the site will be dealt with.
However, a number of elected representatives were unhappy at the lack of detail displayed in the draft proposals. Fianna Fail's Michael Smith says residents are fearful that building more houses without resolving the issues that are already there will lead to more problems.
For his part fellow Fianna Fail Councillor John Hogan welcomed the plans and said that the question of an alternative entrance to the estate is something that can be looked at in time if it’s not possible right now.
