The Environment Minister has pledged more emergency accommodation for homeless people.

Tipperary TD Alan Kelly says the government will ensure there is enough accommodation provided by Christmas so nobody will have to sleep rough – unless they want to.

An emergency summit on the crisis took place at the Department of the Environment in Dublin yesterday – following the death of homeless man Jonathan Corrie just metres from the Dáil earlier this week.

Minister Kelly says they've increased the number of emergency beds to 200.

A charity says the lack of affordable housing is the single biggest barrier to ending homelessness.

Depaul Ireland says the social housing waiting list has now reached 90,000, but affordable homes aren't being built to meet demand.
