The Environment Minister has vowed to ensure no damage is done to Lough Derg if it's used to supply water to Dublin.
Portroe native Alan Kelly says while the capitals water needs will have to be addressed it cannot be to the detriment of the lake.
Irish Water is engaging in an eight week consultation process to decide on where to take the water needed for the greater Dublin area.
The area of Lough Derg around Terryglass and Dromineer is among the options being considered.
As a result there's huge concern pumping out millions of gallons of water from Lough Derg could hit tourism and wildlife.
Environment Minister Alan Kelly says wherever the source is it cannot be allowed to damage the lake.
However the Tipperary based minister says people need to realise that it's not just Dublin which will have difficulty in meeting the demand for water in years to come.
Minister Kelly says the water network will have to be improved across the country.
