A public consultation on improving the water supply for more than half the country begins today.

It will cover the Eastern and Midlands region and includes the controversial proposals to pump 350 million litres of water each day from the River Shannon to the east coast.

The Irish Water plan includes 134 separate water supplies, catering for 2.5 million people, with the aim to support growth and reduce leaks.
