A North Tipperary community is welcoming the news that a notorious dump will finally be cleaned up.

The Department of the Environment has agreed to fund Tipperary County Council to remove an estimated 35,000 tonnes of waste from the site in Rathcabbin.

Shannon Vermicomposting was shut down amid a wave of public outcry and protests by locals in 2004.

Fumes from the site and the excess traffic on small rural roads when the dump was operating at its height caused huge problems for local residents.

Gerard Costello’s farm is right beside it and he says the ordeal ruined his life and his livelihood.

But he’s told Tipp FM he’s overjoyed at the news that there’s finally an end in sight…

The work is likely to take place next year but Director of Services with the local authority Sean Keating says their plans for the massive clean-up job will be finalised in the next four months…
