A Tipperary South election Candidate says he never paid for anyone else’s membership of Fine Gael in an effort to manipulate the party’s selection conventions.

West Tipp Councillor John O’Heney is responding to allegations that he behaved unethically in trying to persuade people to sign up as members so that they could nominate and vote for him if he decided to run for election to the County Council.

Recordings are being circulated of messages Cllr O’Heney sent asking people if they would help him if he paid the membership fees.

He says he never paid for anyone to sign up to the Fine Gael party and was ultimately elected as an Independent candidate in the June local elections.
