The long awaited amalgamation of the two primary schools in Cahir has taken a major leap forward.

Plans to merge Our Lady of Mercy Girls Primary School with Cahir Boys National School have been in the pipeline for years.

The Minister of Education has now lodged an application with Tipperary County Council to demolish the existing girls school.

It will be replaced with a new 16 classroom building catering for pupils from both primary schools in the South Tipp town.

The idea of amalgamating the neighbouring schools has been spoken about for decades – however concrete plans were only set down in the mid 2000’s

Principal of the Boys School Brendan Horan admits it’s been a long time coming.

Like many other primary schools across Tipperary both Our Lady of Mercy and the Boys National School have had to use prefabricated classrooms to cater for the growing student numbers over the years.

Not only has this been a hindrance to proper education, Brendan Horan says they have also been costly.

A decision on the planning application for the new school in Cahir is due from Tipperary County Council by October 10th.
