Scoil Aonghusa in Cashel is to have a visit from a Department of Education official in the coming days.
Local TD Michael Murphy sought an update in the Dáil on the delivery of a long awaited extension for the Special School.
A major extension was confirmed to Deputy Murphy by Minister Helen McEntee in February.
“The current situation has enormous implications for the 150 students with complex special needs who attend this centre of educational excellence. Approval by the Minister of a 14-classroom modular extension and ancillary facilities, announced in this Chamber on 27 February in response to a parliamentary question from me, came as a huge boost to everybody involved in the school. It is news they had been waiting for since, I believe, 2015. Can you give any update on the delivery of this project?”
Minister McEntee acknowledged the importance of delivering improved facilities for Scoil Aonghusa.
She told Deputy Murphy that her department is on the case.
“Following agreement by the school to the brief of accommodation in March, my Department is preparing the brief formulation report for the 14 special educational classrooms and ancillary accommodation. Once that is complete, my Department will consult the school to ensure we have agreement. I also confirm that an official from the Department will visit Scoil Aonghusa, Cashel, in the coming days to discuss progression of the project and to ensure it progresses as quickly as possible.”
