Tipperary County Council and the Minister for Sport have been called on to support efforts to secure the return of motorcycle road racing to the Premier County and six other locations around the country.
The Faugheen 50 has been among the events forced to cancel racing in recent years due in the main to spiralling insurance costs.
Deputy Mattie McGrath says the annual Carrick on Suir event generated valuable local tourism and economic activity.
The recently formed Road Racing Association of Ireland have worked hard to overcome this issue with the Tipperary South TD saying they now need Government support to help revive the road racing events.
He has written to Sport Minister Patrick O’Donovan urging the Government and the Local Authority to engage directly with the RRAI and the Faugheen 50 Supporters Club to help secure the necessary support to allow the Road Races proceed.
He emphasised that road racing events could be a vital part of rural Ireland’s sports tourism strategy if given the chance to succeed.
