Negotiations are said to be at an advanced stage in South Tipperary County Council's bid to purchase the former army barracks in Clonmel.

The Defence Forces vacated Kickham Barracks 18 months ago.

Fine Gael's Michael Murphy sought an update at this weeks meeting of the local authority on the progress being made by the Council to buy the site.

County Manager Billy McEvoy is expecting an early conclusion to the negotiations.

Councillor Murphy says the site is key to Clonmel's future development.
