Local Fine Gael TD Noel Coonan says these works will bring to an end a regular flooding problem affecting farmers in the area.
Last April the need for drainage works to be carried out on a stretch of the River Suir was highlighted during a meeting between local farmers and Minister of State Simon Harris who has responsibility for the Office of Public Works.
The OPW's Director of Engineering also attended the meeting which was organised by Tipperary TD Noel Coonan.
The works have now commenced on the stretch of river between Loughmore and Thurles.
Deputy Coonan says this project is of significant importance to many farmers with lands along this stretch of the River Suir who are affected by continuous flooding of their lands.
The Fine Gael representative says it was essential that lands such as these were brought into production to meet our food targets into the future as part of Food Wise 2025.
