DNA survey confirm traveller ancestry

The research by the Royal College of Surgeons and the University of Edinburgh examined the genetic structure of the Irish Traveller Community and estimated that Travellers split from the 'settled' community more than 360 years ago. 

The findings come as the state is expected to formally recognise the Traveller Community as a distinct ethnic group.

Martin Collins, the co-director of Pavee Point, says it confirms what Travellers have been saying for years – that their community predates the famine.
