Laois farmer and Devils Bit Macra club member John Keane has been elected the 38th President of Macra na Feirme.

He’s the fourth member of a Tipperary Macra club to serve in the role, after securing 105 of the 117 votes in a contest with Clonmel farmer Daniel Long, a member of the Rathkeevan club.

Daniel said earlier this week that he wouldn’t attend the count today in dispute over his lack of input into the appointment of an independent scrutineer.

Macra is an organisation which represents 17-35 year olds from 170 clubs in rural Ireland.
